Brief Biography:
Active between 1950s and 1980s in New York City, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne operated as artist-furniture makers creating one of a kind and limited edition pieces Kelvin, the son, started working with his father in 1960 after extensive studies in art history, metal sculpturing and furniture design. They opened a studio on Wooster Street in New York City where they created their masterpieces of patinated bronze, pewter and silver. Their process for making the patinated bronze series started around 1954 and took six years for the LaVernes to refine. They lived up to the name of functional art with flat bronze and pewter surfaces articulated with classically-inspired images, and later pieces in 70s-80s that were more sculptural and three-dimensional. Motifs were drawn from history with scenes like Chinese, Egyptian, Etruscan and Greek. Most came in limited editions of 12 with some exceptions in very popular model such as Chan. Most of their creations are collectible.
